Whence Came a Prince

Here's what reviewers are saying about

"Liz Curtis Higgs ends her Christian historical series on a high note with Whence Came a Prince. Oftentimes, when an author tackles a three-part series, they wind up flagging by the time they get to No. 3. Not Higgs. This is a series that every fan of good fiction should read. Higgs does an excellent job of wrapping the Biblical story in Scottish customs and heather."

"I read and enjoyed both of the first two books, but let me tell you, Higgs has outdone herself with Whence Came a Prince. Her style of writing—always beautifully flowing, lyrical and evocative—has truly blossomed into full flower in this book.

"Higgs has saturated herself with Scottish culture and ambience, with repeated trips to the country she now calls her second home—and the fact that she's availed herself of the lore in hundreds of Scottish research books is obvious in the telling of these stories. But her meticulous research is seamlessly interwoven into the fabric of the story.

"Higgs' sensitive empathy with her characters brings them to life and makes us feel their pain, their joy, their faith, transporting us into their world to the point that we're sad when the story is over and we have to close the book."

"Finally, my prince has come! Liz Curtis Higgs's much-anticipated and long-awaited sequel to Thorn in My Heart and Fair Is the Rose has been released. This trilogy is set in the Scottish Lowlands during the 1790's, and is by far and large my favorite series out of the hundreds of books I have ever read. I cannot say enough about this fantastic author and her amazing novels. In order to get the full impact from this book, I highly recommend the reader first read the other two books in the series before attempting to understand this one. The historical aspect of this novel itself makes it a worthwhile read, not to mention the heart-wrenching emotional feelings it invokes in its readers. Whence Came a Prince, along with the two earlier novels, should be read once to get the deep emotional impact of this ageless tale, and again to capture the inspirational and historical significance it will give its reader. These three books are ones that live with the reader much longer than the hours it takes to read them. Liz Curtis Higgs is a master storyteller of the highest caliber, and one whom I will always look up to and search out when looking for an awesome read. Ms. Higgs's books will proudly take up residence on my keeper shelves, but will not remain there collecting dust--they will be re-read many times in the coming years."

"Whence Came A Prince lives up to everything the first two books gave us. Romance and the struggles to get our happily-ever-after ending fill the pages of this wonderful work of fiction. Liz Curtis Higgs has done a beautiful job of painting the Scottish Lowlands in our minds and showing us the true meaning of love, sacrifice and faith. I highly recommend Whence Came A Prince."

“Though Whence Came a Prince is historical fiction, it has everything a contemporary novel usually offers…more than one beautiful love story, lust, greed, deception, hair-raising journeys…Higgs’ trilogy includes these elements and adds God’s grace. Liz’s goal is to 'demonstrate the fallibility of man and the infallibility of God…I especially long for readers who do not know God’s love to find their way home.' Her favorite character? Higgs said, 'Definitely Leana—and judging by reader letters, I’m not alone! She is a grace-filled, gentle-spirited woman who loves God with all her heart and lives out her beliefs sacrificially.' Whence Came a Prince is an unforgettable reading adventure. As the grand finale in Higgs’ trilogy, it is her best creation yet.”

"Concluding the trilogy that began with Thorn in My Heart, Liz Curtis Higgs welcomes readers for the final time into the world of Old Testament characters Leah, Rachel and Jacob-disguised as Leana, Rose and Jamie, respectively living in 18th-century Scotland. This delightful finale includes the same accuracy of historical Scotland found in its predecessors and will continue to open readers' eyes anew to the truths found in this biblical story."

"For those who love historicals this is one you don't want to miss! The characters and the plot will pull at your heartstrings and leave your emotions in turmoil. At times I loved all three characters, at times disliked some of them, at times just shook my head at their actions, but most of the time I found myself in tears. Crying for Leana, Rose, and Jamie and all they had to face. The setting is richly detailed and the characters are so well developed I felt I knew them in real life. The inspirational message left such a deep emotional pull on my heart. I did feel at times that Jamie was not a "hero" in some of his past actions, but as the story unfolds I couldn't help but love him as deeply as Leana and Rose. As for Leana and Rose, I felt closer to Leana and could identify with her much better than Rose, so therefore saw Leana in a better light, I think. Rose did grow on me and I found myself caring deeply for her and hoping all would work out for her. I found they all had a hard road to travel down. A road that would bring heartache, and pain, but also joy, happiness and love.

"I would hate for those who shy away from Inspirationals to miss out on this exceptional book. It is rich in detail and alive with emotions as well as characters you can't help but adore. The historical aspects alone are enthralling. If you want a book that will be with you for awhile, will touch your heart and soul, and has a story told unlike any other I've read in awhile, you don't want to miss Whence Came a Prince!

"In Whence Came a Prince, sequel to Thorn in My Heart and Fair Is the Rose, author Liz Curtis Higgs continues the heart-rending story of sisters, Leana and Rose McBride, both who dearly love Jamie McKie. Readers will cheer for Leana, who is probably one of the best heroines I’ve ever read about. Though she endures terrible things that would break a normal person, her unwavering faith in God carries her through again and again. She is more than kind and forgiving to Rose, who treated her horribly. I didn’t want to forgive Rose myself, but Leana did, and it was the right thing to do. Jamie makes an excellent hero, though it’s hard to imagine anyone getting himself into a situation like he has.

"Readers will definitely want to read the previous two books in the series to fully grasp what is happening in Whence Came a Prince. Also, keep the glossary handy, so you can understand the rich Scottish dialect. You’ll find your emotions in a tug-of-war as Ms. Higgs throws one obstacle after another at Leana, Rose, and Jamie. Conflict abounds, keeping you eagerly turning the pages. A powerful faith message of trusting God no matter what and forgiving those who have wronged you is sure to inspire and encourage readers. Historical Scotland comes alive before your eyes in Whence Came a Prince."
