Emily Dickinson wrote, “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul.” Maybe she pictured a little black-capped chickadee, the state bird of her native Massachusetts. I need more hope than that. I need twelve pounds of bald eagle with seven thousand feathers. The kind of hope that has the power to lift us over the dry plains and barren deserts of our lives.
When we come to the end of ourselves, our plans, our dreams, we finally begin to realize our hope is found only in Jesus. Martha laid claim to that hope when she declared “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world” (John 11:27). Yes, a woman said that! Then her sister, Mary of Bethany, demonstrated her hope in His resurrection when she took a pint of expensive perfume, “poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair.” (John 12:3). Beautiful.
When I come to Roseau (and sisters, I CANNOT wait!), I’ll share the hope-filled stories of these women from God’s Word, as together we discover the utter joy and the absolute peace that Jesus alone provides. And I promise we’ll laugh, because nothing lightens the heart like hope!
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19
