The 20 Verses You Love Most | Liz Curtis Higgs

What is the one verse that nourishes and sustains you, year in and year out?

You know the one. Your life verse. Your mission statement. Your word from the Lord. The verse you’ve memorized, posted on a bulletin board, stitched onto fabric, written below your signature.

I know it’s hard to narrow it down to one, when “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Every word is vital, every verse serves God’s purposes.

Still, might you choose just one? Not a long passage or a cluster of verses: just one?

I’ll go first, then invite you to add the one verse you love most under Post a Comment below. After tallying your responses here (and on Facebook and Twitter), I’ll compile our Top 20, then begin a weekly countdown, unpacking each verse with care.

By summer’s end, we’ll not only know what all 20 verses are, we’ll know them, inside and out. No book to buy, no homework to do. Simply join us each Wednesday, and you’re good to go.

First, a wee smile. I wanted just the right image for this week’s verse, so I searched on “2 Corinthians.” And I got this:

Right. Two Corinthian columns. Exactly what I had in mind. LOL.

Instead, here’s one of the Bibles on my desk, as we spend a moment with the verse I love most. Maybe it’s one of your favorites too.

Bible Open to 2 Corinthians

2 Corinthians 5:17 was the first verse I memorized in February 1982 as a brand-new believer. Season by season, whatever the translation, these powerful words have become even more alive to me than the first time I read them with tears in my eyes.

Listen now for God’s gentle voice: This phrase. This word. This is for you.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: 
The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

The verse has no more than 20 words, yet it contains at least 8 huge truths and, in some translations, an exclamation point or two.

I’m in.

Therefore…

Big word in Scripture, therefore. Shows up 442 times in the NIV.

Or, maybe you prefer ”wherefore” (ASV), “so then” (CEB), “for” (NLV), “it follows” (KNOX), “what we see is” (MSG), or “this means that” (NLT).

All good.

Therefore is a summary kind of word, taking into account all that comes before it. This portion of the letter to the church at Corinth is about reconciliation. About being Christ’s ambassadors. About looking at one another through a new lens.

Therefore says, “Because of that, consider this.”

…if…

If is an open door, full of possibilities and overflowing with hope. Jesus often used this word in his teaching: “if you have faith” (Matthew 17:20) and “if you knew the gift of God” (John 4:10) and “if you remain in me” (John 15:5).

If makes us stop and ask the question: Who is this verse meant for? Am I invited?

An Invitation

…anyone…

Anyone means “Yes, this verse is yours to claim” or “Have a seat. This verse may belong to you.”

Anyone definitely includes you.

Whether we’re talking “whoever” (GW) or “any man” (ASV) or “any person” (AMP) or just “any” (DRA), the door to eternal life is open, and the Lord himself is beckoning us forward. “Heaven, anyone?”

…is…

I know, I know. “Is, Liz? You’re going teach me something about the word is?”

You bet. It’s the pivotal word in this verse. Either you is or you is not a follower of Christ. Though we are ever growing in our faith, there is still a defining moment for each of us.

And that moment is defined by God, not by us.

When Jesus asked Peter, “Who do you say I am?” and Peter responded, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God,” the Lord didn’t congratulate Peter for being wise or making a good decision. Instead, Jesus told him, “This was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 16:15-17).

Peter made his confession of faith by God’s power alone.

I AM says that I am. Not the other way around.

See why is is such a big deal?

…in Christ…

Some translations give this little word in a bit more muscle: “belongs to” (CEV), “united with” (CJB), “joined to” (GNT), “believes in” (NIRV). But it’s the One in whom we live and move and have our being that matters, which is why the word in cannot stand alone.

We are in Christ. No one and nothing else. He is also resides in us, by way of the Holy Spirit, but first and foremost, we are in Christ.

“The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23
“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1
“For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” 1 Corinthians 15:22

There are tons more to choose from, but you get the idea. The rest of 2 Corinthians 5:17 depends on the Lord’s work in us, now that we live in him.

Building a Foundation, Starting with the First Nail

…the new creation has come…

God doesn’t just clean us up, fix us up, straighten us up. He recreates us in the image of his Son. He starts from scratch. He makes us new.

In Christ we become “a new being” (GNT), “a new person” (NLT), “a new creature altogether” (AMP). In Christ we get “a fresh start” (MSG).

What does that look like in real life? There are as many answers as there are people.
For me, a changed life three decades ago looked like this:

I stopped drinking alcohol and started making real friends.
I stopped using drugs and started reading the Bible.
I stopped sleeping around and started going to church.
I stopped running away and started putting down roots.
I stopped pretending I had all the answers and started asking God for answers.

Through it all, God loved me. That was the realization that undid me, in the best sense of the word. It shattered my misconceptions. It trampled my pride.

God didn’t just rock my world; God blew my world apart, then rebuilt it from the ground up.

Made New from the Ground Up

…The old has gone,…

Truly, it has. On the days when you feel as if the roof is sagging and the walls are caving in, be confident of this: “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

Some of us start well, but run out of steam. God is both a starter and a finisher.

Along the way stuff from our old lives must be pried from our stubborn hands and cast aside. Old habits, old ideas, old lies.

My inclination is to tuck such things in the deep recesses of a drawer, just in case I need them. Just in case I miss them.

God has a better plan. He makes certain those old things have truly “gone away” (CEB), that “the old way of living has disappeared” (GW), and “the past is forgotten” (CEV).

Gone means gone. History. Out of sight, out of mind, out of reach.

Gone means good riddance. Really good.

The New Is Here!

…the new is here!

This translation uses an exclamation point to grab our attention. But the Greek word idou in this verse is often rendered “behold” (ASV), “look” (CEB), “see” (NRSV), or the one that’s the most fun to say, “Lo!” (WYC)

Getting rid of the old would be exciting enough, yet God also brings in the new. A new gift, a new talent, a new calling.

I was working at a radio station when God turned my world right side up. I could never have imagined speaking at conferences or writing books or teaching the Bible. I was quite happy hiding in my studio.

But God said, “Behold, the fresh and new has come!” (AMP) God said, “A new life has begun!” (NLT) God said, “New things have arrived!” (CEB)

What is God saying to you, beloved? What new thing has he brought to your doorstep?

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: 
The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

    Can I be really greedy and choose two?! If not, my all time “go to” verse is from Jeremiah, 29:11 “I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord,”plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
    This verse was an answer to prayer many years ago, and it always renews my hope whenever I’m feelings that things are….well, hopeless.
    My ‘reserve’ verse is Isaiah 41:13, and was a really powerful prayer I said every day when my son was struggling with the physical demands of officer training at RAF camp. How strengthened you feel after being told by God:
    “That’s right. Because I, your God, have a firm grip on you and I’m not letting go. I’m telling you, “DON’T PANIC. I’m right here to help you.”
    Wow! Just think, if only I could do as I’m told and not panic!
    So there they are….hope you can see why I can’t choose between them! I’m really looking forward to learning everyone’s favourites over the next few months. I’m really inspired by this subject. In fact I’m attending a faith journaling workshop on Friday, what Divine timing. I may even start a journal of all our favourites!

      That is my go to verse as well. {Jeramiah 29:11} This verse helped me through a very traumatic time in my life a few years back. A time that I never would have been able to make it through without the help of a straight jacket(!) had it not been for my faith in Christ Jesus. I often pass it on to friends and family that are going through difficult times as well. What it means to me is that no matter what we are faced with in our earthly life our Heavenly Father knows exactly what we are going through and why we are having to go through it. At the time it may hurt so bad or be so humbeling that it brings us to our knees, but….no matter what HIS plan is for us to grow and bear witness. To be that change, the change that others see. That they too can have a future full of HOPE and his never ending LOVE. Love this verse!!

        That is mine as well. I do not know many verses but that one was shown to me at a time of terribly darkness in my life and it is always brings me back and gives me hope.

          What an awesome verse…I have put that on my son’s quilt and a granddaughter’s quilt and to this day she always reminds me of that verse. As with Karen I have one more from Zephaniah 3:16-17, “Cheer up, Zion! Don’t be afraid! For the Lord your God has arrived to live among you. He is a mighty savior. He will rejoice over you with great gladness. With His love, he will calm all your fears. He will exult over you by singing a happy song” I have written that on pillowcases made for each of my grandchildren and for me it reminds me how much the Lord loves me and that He sings over me with gladness.

            yes! zephaniah 3:17. “the LORD your God is with you. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you. He will rejoice over you with singing. He will quiet you with His love.” in my battle to subdue my insecurities and fears, this has become my lifeline!

      The verses from Jeremiah and Isaiah are both wonderful and there are so many other inspiring, comforting verses that it is truly difficult to chose, and I often have one dependent on my mood and where I am in life. One of my favorites, however, is from Psalm 32:8. “I will make you wise and show you where to go. I will guide you and watch over you” I derive so much comfort from these thoughts.

      My favorite verse used to be Romans 8:28. It carried me through and proved itself during some very difficult times.

      Now I am very fond of the Jeremiah verse “I know the plans I have for you…”

    I’m so excited about this series of Bible Study posts!

    I find that different verses are precious in different seasons and times of need. In my current season of singleness, for example, Philippians 3:8-11 are my go-to verses … backed up by Jeremiah 29:11, Psalm 37:4 and Psalm 25:3.

    That said, however, THE verse (although there are really two of them) that I’ve loved since childhood and remember over and over and over again is Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.”

    I think I love this verse because it assures me over and over again that “all” I need to do is trust God and make Him a part of everything I do and He will guide the paths and the steps of my life.

      my all time favorite is also Proverbs 3:5-6. Since Childhood this verse has been a source of strength and comfort. “Trust in the Lord with all your Heart, and lean not on your own Understanding. In all your ways , acknowledge Him and He will direct your path. “

      When my husband passed away suddenly 10 years ago, my cousin sent a card with Proverbs 3:5-6 written inside. I grasped that verse as a drowning woman grasps a life preserver. Trust in the Lord was all I had, for I had no understanding, and He has provided for me, guided me and loved me through the journey. I still cherish that card, but even more I cherish those sweet words that are now written on my heart.

    The day my son was diagnosed with Autism I came across this verse and I don’t feel that it was by mistake or coincidence. ” And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28. This does more than tell me, it ASSURES me that there will be greater things to come in the life of my boy, and I claim them in the name of Jesus EVERYDAY!

        Romans 8:28 is the one for me, too. From the day I was saved, 31 years ago last month, until today. It reminds me that even the unplanned, hard things in life will work together for my good and God’s glory. Through the years, I have come to love the rest of the chapter, verses 29 to 39 because they contain such powerful promises.

      My Life Verse since first studying “Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts” with Bill Gothard in 1971 in Dallas, TX: Romans 8:28 ~ And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.

    I love Deuteronomy 11:26-28. “I lay before you a blessing and a curse. Follow my ways and be blessed, disobey my commands and be cursed.” Paraphrased slightly LOL. It is about choices in life. The choices we make can be a blessing or a curse. I chose for many years not to follow God. My life may not be easy and perfect, but by choosing to follow God, it has definitely been blessed.

      Liz, this is one of those verses we read a lot but still are tempted to ignore. In the world that most of us live in, “being still” seems unrealistic and often impossible. However, I’ve always been amazed at how our Father ALWAYS blesses us when we obey this command. I’ve never looked back on time spent with Him and thought, “Oh, I wish I had used that time for something else.” Have you? He is faithful to redeem the time we give to Him and He redeems it ABUNDANTLY!

        Psalm 46:10 is my favorite, too! I try to “be still” first, before reading the Bible, and I pray that His Word will speak to me and that I will be receptive to His Word.     I too have two verses. One, Psalm 119:165 became my verse when I was in college:” Great peace have they which love thy law and nothing shall offend them.” KJV Easy to remember, but it reminds me that the Word of God is the source of all peace. The other is one I had to memorize in German and it has stuck with me: John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” KJV He alone is the way of salvation, and the source of all knowledge, and eternal life.

We are learning to take to heart Philippians 4:8: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.

    My favorite verses are colossians 3:12-14 (message)
    “so, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline.Be even tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense.Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love.It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.”

    ***John 15: 15-16(NRSV) “15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. ”

    How powerful is that? Jesus considers each one of us His friend. He CHOSE us to be in His Kingdom?

      Amen to John 15:16 … you did not choose Me but I chose you…. That was the first verse that popped out at me as Christ speaking to me through His living, powerful and active Word over 20 years ago. As a new believer, reading John with fresh eyes and heart, this verse assured me that though i had run from Him, the Shepherd had sought me out and He considers me His friend! How amazing is that truth.

      Also, in daily life: Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear not for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (NKJV). That is the verse of all that i’ve memorized that springs to my heart in any struggle.

    Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” I rest in this promise that God is in control and His plan for my life is great and will not be a letdown. At this most difficult time in my life when my husband lost his job last October and we now just lost our home to foreclosure, it’s comforting to know God still has a plan for me. I don’t know what it is, and I’d really like to get a glimpse of it, but I rest in the knowledge that He will work it out for us if we just trust Him. My husband is STILL looking for work, by the way. 🙁 Times are frightening and we question why he keeps getting doors shut in his face but we trust God through it all and know there is a GREAT thing coming to our lives.

    Greetings from a snowy Sheffield in the UK 🙂
    I had to answer the ‘life verse’ question recently as part of my selection process for ordination. I chose ‘For the word of God is living and active’ (Hebrews 4v12) as a way of reflecting the times & seasons for favourite verses.
    This week my life verse is ‘Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen!’ (Luke 24:5-6)
    I wonder what words God will be shining His light on next week?

    This verse has gotten me through many a rough patch with the blessed assurance that even if i cannot see or understand the plans, HE knows them and they are good and right and I can rest well in that!

    Phil 4:13. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. This really has been my life verse. Years ago I was so fearful I wouldn’t even go to the store by myself. Now because of his strength in my life I walk in a park for a hour alone with him. I still have a long way to go and I need his strength every day, but it sure feels good to know I have it.

      I too suffered with panic, anxiety and fear, during pregnancy no less so drugs were not an option. Scripture was! And I used the same Phil 4:13 to get through the day, along with these:
      John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
      John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world

      This was my second choice….My daughter and I stood on this verse while she was receiving her treatment for lymphoma…when the treatments failed and they told her to get her affairs in order we stood on His word with all we had, found a new oncologist and she went through another treatment with stem cell transplant a Duke to follow. We were there for one month and she amazed everyone with how well things were going, as horrifice as they were. When she completed her treatment we went home knowing she was healed! That was five years ago…her son is now 8 years old and she is in her last year of law school…tell me God is not awesome!! I learned then to never, ever listen to mans diagnosis alone!

      This is my favorite! It’s my go-to verse anytime I think I can’t handle what is going on in my life. We had a very rebellious teen and tough love was the only way to handle many of the situations we had to go through. God is so good, and brought this verse to mind during the hardest circumstances. And through His mercy, that rebellious teen turned out to be a living testimony to God’s grace!

    Ephesians 3:17:
    “So that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love……”

    It took a few years after accepting Christ into my life and all the speculation that goes with believing in Him, to really understand what faith was and is to me. This helped me to understand that it is all about believing in Him without seeing.

    Liz Liz Liz — I absolutely positively LOVE it when you “break it down” word by word by lovable holy word. The insights gained by teaching us how to do this exercise is revelation. A joy. A blessing. So thankful for your encouragements. SO… at 55 years young, I’ve got more than a few go-to verses … and yes, Jeremiah 29:11 can carry a girl – it has carried me many many times. Phillipians 4:6 carried me from college days into young wife/mom-hood. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” But combine that with the life verse found in Acts 17:28 … “In Him I move and have my being.” and well — it’s a holy wow.     How important is the Word of God to my heart daily as I search for guidance in my journey of faith. Proverbs 3:5-6 are a favourite that I often refer to, but my favourite at this season of my life is Matthew 11:28-30 from the Message translation …
    “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

    My favorite verse is Zephaniah 3:17 ” The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with His love, HE will rejoice over you with singing.” How can you NOT love a God who rejoices over you with singing! !? Just marvelous!

      I love this verse – I remember praying it over my grandson when he was born. Two years later we found out he was autistic, and this verse took on an even more special meaning.

    -Hebrews 13:5 (NLT). This and Jeremiah 29:11 like many others said. At this point in my life, I need to remember that He will always be with me and provide for me. He does want what’s best for me. He will never fail or abandon even when life is at it toughest. Money isn’t anything! Contentment is important! God is all. He is good all the time!

    Isaiah 55:11 So shall my Word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

    I pray this verse for my kids that are not walking with the Lord. It’s my Hope for them. I may never see them return to Him in my lifetime (I’m 70) but my Hope is in the Lord’s promises from this verse and that one day they will be in Heaven with me.

      Two verses have always echoed in my heart for my sons:
      Jer 29:11 for my oldest who makes many plans that never seem to work out. Would that he only believed that God’s plans will always work for his good!
      Luke 22:31-32 – “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” (BTW his name is Simon, named before I knew Christ). Only turn back, my precious son. He is waiting for you.
      And now Is 55:11 – not a new verse to me but what a new strength I’m drawing from it today. Thank you Sue. Thank you, Jesus. It is You who is my Rock and my Fortress.

    I love Isaiah 49:11 “Sing for joy, O heavens! Rejoice, O earth! Burst into sing, O mountains! For the Lord has conforted his people & will have compassion on them in their sorriw.” This verse reminds me to always celebrate God’s goodness. God’s geace & comfort are always waiting for me, even in the midst of pain & despair.

    Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
    Love the story of Joshua, love the reminder that fear and discouragement are lies of the enemy, but more so, love the reminder we are never alone! God will never leave us nor forsake us, oh wait, that’s another verse. LOL

So I’ll go to the first verse I ever memorized – over 30 years ago – long before I ever began studying the Bible for myself. “Trust the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

    I came across this verse as a teenager when I read Norman Vincent Peale’s “The Power of Positive Thinking”. It was an anchor for my soul through many years of foolish desert wandering. And it still brings comfort and strength when uncertainty abounds. The Lord is so faithful.

    2 Corinthians 12:9 – “But He said to me, my grace is sufficient for you When you are weak then I am strong. My power is made perfect in you.” So I am very happy to brag about my weaknesses. Then Christ’s power can live in me.” This is my favorite verse, because “Grace” is my favorite word to me, I think – “Grace”, His Name is Jesus!” Without Grace/Jesus, I would still be lost; I would not have my salvation; I would not have my good days and bad days covered by Him.

    Isaiah 40:31 – They that wait (hope in the Lord) on the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. However, I discovered that starting at verse 28 it gives verse 31 so much meaning and power to my life. —28: Do you not know: Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth, He will not grow weary and His understanding no one can fathom.29: He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30:Even youths grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall
    31:–BUT they that wait upon the Lord will renew your strength. They will soar like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint!
    It it so powerful! And gives me strength when I need it.

    First I have to say WOW. The Lord really wants me to hear the words of 2 Corinthians 5:17 today and I am taking heed! This posting of yours is truly a blessing used in the Lord’s perfect timing.
    So hard to choose just one verse! I’m going to share a verse I was instructed to memorize during a difficult and “shameful” time in my life, because it brought me such comfort and hope.

    1 Corinthians 10:13
    No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

    This verse helped me to fight against the lies of Satan that “no one is as bad as me”, and also helped me focus on the faithfulness of God, He who never fails. It was such a comfort to release the chains of guilt and shame, to repent and recommit to following Christ and embracing the New Life He offers. In a way, that verse in my life lead me to the verse you shared today.

    Our God is Amazing. 🙂

There was a hymn we sang which had this verse in the chorus. Coming to Christ as an adult, I’d never memorized scripture, only rules. What liberation and life I found in Him. Like Lazarus my grave cloths were stripped away!

    What an exciting journey through the bible we will have this summer! My “go to” bible verse always seems to be “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9. I tend to find myself avoiding life, making decisions based on fear of failure or unsure if I am doing the right thing. Then I remember that as long as I have God with me, HE will NOT fail ME. So I stand strong and courageous and will even write this verse on things when I am not sure and he gives me the strength. I didn’t understand why this verse was my confirmation verse all those years ago. Now I do. God is truly amazing!

    When the bible was written – it wasn’t divided into chapters and verses and so when sharing the scripture that inspires me and keeps my head above water during trying times (and there have been toooo many!!) I have to include both verses in Proverbs 3:5-6. The second … completes the first thought. They are my heart song. “TRUST in the LORD, with ALL your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In ALL your ways ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, and HE will direct your paths.” My finite mind – cannot grasp the totality of my life and those around me. Watching parents die of cancer, having children with serious medical concerns, loss of job (facing this one for the second time right now) I see how “I think” that things are supposed to be – I set my heart on that – only to be disappointed. But with my heart set on Him – and His words, and His life, and His promises – I can have confidence that He is in control of every situation – and even though it may not be a path that I would choose – I trust that He will bring me to the place that will bring Glory and Honor and Praise to Him, because isn’t that what we are to be about?

    Thank you so much for sharing such an awesome bible study with us. I am so looking forward to participating and committing more of His word to my mind and heart.

    Oh, this is going to be sooooo good, Liz! And how you tackle the Scripture, word by word, is my favorite thing in the world.You will bless a bazillion of us! I loved the part in your post about you “either ‘is’ or you ‘is not’….reminding me of those fab words in “the Help” –“You is smart, you is kind, you is important” …ha…For Scriptures, I’ve changed my life-verse only once, so far…used to be Gal. 5:22-23 on the fruit of the Spirit…I switched b/c while I know this is wrong theoligically, I never felt like I could have all 9 traits at the same time, usually from that little hyphenated “self-control” part. Sigh…Thus, what really speaks to me is Matt. 11:28-30 because I sorta run “tired & weary”, ya know?!!! The whole verse says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, I will give you REST. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find REST FOR YOUR SOULS. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” The Message says something about learning the “unforced rhythms of grace” ….ahhhhh….Excited to see what you’ll do with this series!     I have struggled with my weight all my life. Through God’s grace, I’m living out this verse. He helps me every day to maneuver the trials of the day, and through Him I’ve been able to effectively manage my weight for 2 years now.

      Gwyn, I can relate so well. one day, a verse jumped out at me, as I struggled with food temptations:
      Gal 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
      How often do we go on the diet, overeat roller coaster? God doesn’t want us to burden ourselves over and over by the yoke of overeating. We have been set free! Why on earth do we still sit in jail then?

    Phillipians 4:13. I can do all things threw Christ who strengthens me. I remember helping my Mom’s students learn this threw song for a performace in front of the church.     There are so many, but the one which is my go to verse would be Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
    On 3/6/07 I was attending our Tuesday evening prayer meeting, and my husband had just lost his job that day, when a friend read this verse. She said God gave her this for someone that night. I knew in my spirit right away that God wanted me to hear this. I have prayed this over so many situations for myself and others over the last several years. The Word is alive and active, always!

    One of my very favorite Bible verses is Zephaniah 3:17 “The Lord your God is in your midst. He will quiet you by His love. He will exult over you with loud singing”. A get such a warm feeling when I read this verse. To know that God is with me always…He is in our midst..even when things are in a turmoil He is still there. “He will quite you by His love”…sometimes I feel all confused and anxious inside and just reading or remembering a word from God can settle me. It is also a comfort to know that God loves me so much and knows me that he will ‘brag’ about me “with loud singing”.

    “Do not be afraid, Abram (Karen). I am your shield, your very great reward.”
    When I seek HIM, not stuff or my fleshly desires, I gain all the rewards that He desires for His children…the ones that do satisfy and fill me to the full, that give me abundant life!
    I’m not afraid to step out boldly in His name or pray big prayers because He’s my shield; my protection, the One who covers me from head to toe with His presence and power.
    Yes, if I have nothing but God, I have EVERYTHING!

    Jeremiah 29:11 – first thought when I saw the title today. There are so many more but this was shared by a friend when I was dealing with a medical issue and praying it wasn’t cancer. My children were 5 and 3 and I couldn’t understand what God had in store for us. I’ve trusted Him and His path for me and have been blessed every day. God is good – all the time.

    No doubt, this is exactly where I need to be today… I CANNOT WAIT to get into these 20 verses! Just reading the ones that have been posted so far… several of my favorites are already there. The one that gives me most comfort right now is Jeremiah 31:15-16, This is what the Lord says: “A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”This is what the Lord says: “Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded,” declares the Lord. “They will return from the land of the enemy.
    One day I was having a very hard time with where my kids were in their walk with the Lord. I was sitting on my bedroom floor, sobbing, and opened the Bible and prayed, “Lord, YOU HAVE TO SHOW ME SOMETHING. YOU have to give me a peace.” I looked down and it was as if these words lifted off of the page and became magnified. When I worry and think my kids are not getting it… I remember this verse.

The 2nd is Psalm 40:2He lifted me out of the slimy pit,out of the mud and the mire;he set my feet on a rock. another version of that verse goes like this and is the one I like the best, He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and mire.     During the most challenging season in our faith, as I battled in prayer for my husband’s life to be spared and for our 3 little boys to be able to grow up with their daddy, I clung to the following verse(s):
    “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning, great is His faithfulness.” (Lam. 3:22-23, ESV)
    And…His love was unfailing in its grip on us, His mercies were literally new every.single.morning as my husband experienced the Healer’s touch over the 16 days he was in a coma and the 16 more that it took to leave the hospital, and His faithfulness was {and is} GREAT as He continues to use that difficult season for HIS glory and our good!!

    My verse is Proverbs 3:5 ” Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight.” Last Wednesday my husband was involved in school bus vs semi wreck. He was driving the bus. God in His mercy saw to it that the two children on the bus and the truck driver were not even scratched but my husband suffered sever bruising both externally and internally. Through 2 different trips to ER at 2 hospitals and a trip to the VA hospital 2 hours away I kept repeating this verse. We have no idea why the bus didn’t stop, but we do know that God was watching over everyone. And while I don’t understand why it had to happen at all, I do understand that God will use this for His good. As a minister it is teaching me what it feels like to be on this side of an issue, and as a woman of faith I hope to use this experience to help others, and to demonstrate my husband’s and my faith as we work through the process of healing and discovery!

    I have to echo so many others – Jer. 29:11 has held me steady many, many times. In the big pictures of life, just to know that God (creator of all things) has a plan for MY life and that even if I veer off course, He will still work that detail into the fabric of the big picture. This verse requires trust, especially when we don’t yet see where He is leading, but it also brings peace in knowing that whatever happens – He can still bring us to the place we are supposed to be. What an awesome way to live!

    I LOVE this!! I love reading other people’s favorite verses and finding treasures I had forgotten or never noticed before. Soooo hard to only pick one, but I have to say Jeremiah 31:3 “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.” When I was going through a difficult time a while back, God very LOUDLY (not audibly, but loudly) spoke this verse to my soul. He reminds me of it from time to time when I get caught up in life and forget that he is always there, always faithful, always loving – even when I fail. This is not my only life verse, but it is at the top of the list.

It came to me through a testimony from a couple who talked about losing their baby (before birth) and how they had to change their plans for their future. And how they turned to God and said ‘sometimes your plan does not work out-but God gives you a different plan’…..and then years later, my son and daughter in law miscarried at 20 weeks and immediately this verse came to mind. So soothing. I also love Hebrews 11:1. ‘Faith is being sure of what you hope for and certain of what you cannot see.’ I thank God that there are so many verses to love.

    My very first verse I studied after I became a Christian was Matthew 6:33 – But seek FIRST His kingdom and His righteousness , and all these things will be given to you as well. We claim this as “our verse”.

    I have been given so much and I am so thankful, I have been through some very hard times, but The Lord has been there, because we sought after His kingdom and His righteousness.

    Our verse for this year proclaimed by our church is Jeremiah 29:11. I was so blessed to see it pop up so many times today.

    Bless you Liz , Jesus is calling for a decision that lets us live contented with what we have because we have chosen what is eternal and everlasting. You are a gift given to me Sista!

    For as far back as I can remember I have suffered with low self esteem. Although I worked very hard to disguise my insecurities, I wasn’t able to stop depending on the opinions of others in order to feel loved and acceptable until I came to know in my heart that I was created by God…WONDERFULLY! The knowledge of God’s love and acceptance brought about a new self-confidence that I had been able to acquire from the approval of anyone else.
    With my newfound confidence I also became comfortable turning to the Lord in my times of need. No longer do I feel the need to hide from Him in shame because I am good and He loves me just as I am, flaws and all.
    Thank you Jesus!

    Reminds me of the absolute permanence of God, everything else, no matter how trying, and yes ma’am this life can be so very tough, it is temporary, fleeting. God is in the past, present, and your future…? He is already there, and waits with comforting arms, open W-I-D-E if only we accept and believe. Wow, the One who created the universe loves you that much, if that does not blow your mind, I don’t know what will! God is so good, that the word good just is not enough!!! But since so many have listed that one already, I have chosen the last verse in a passage that I hope guides my actions. Matthew 25:40 ends the story of “I was hungry and you gave me… ” It says, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

    Psalms 91 is MY scripture. It has kept me steady all my life. When I was little, my daddy was gone all week working out of town. He would come home on Friday evening, leave again on Sunday afternoon after church, and be gone until Friday evening again. This lasted for several years. My mom and I were alone all week. Mom was a very strong christian. She lived her salvation and her love for God with every breath she took. She was also very afraid of the dark. The night time was the worst for us with daddy gone all week. Every night before we went to bed, mom would read Psalm 91 to me. She instilled in me a trust in God, and a knowledge that I have angels to keep me safe. She also instilled in me a fear of the dark that I’ve had to battle my whole life. Psalm 91 has always been there for me to stand on. I memorized it when I was young and I can quote it whenever I feel fearful. As I’ve gotten older, my faith is stronger, and I don’t have the fear I use to have, but this scripture still keeps me steady. My other scripture is Psalm 71:5: O Lord, You alone are my hope. I’ve trusted you from childhood. I really have. My mom and my daddy are in heaven now, but my mom has left me a legacy of faith and trust in God that has sustained me, and will continue to as long as I live.

    But my all time favorite verse is John 15:5 “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in Me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing.” Remain, or abide, in Christ. I can do nothing without Him. I receive everything I need from Him. Remain….

    And if I can add one more that is becoming more and more precious to me……Isaiah 43:1b, 4b “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine……..because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you.”

    I have two:
    First, 1 Timothy 4:12 has been my favorite since my teenage years. It was a reminder to me as a young adult, young minister’s wife and young mother, of how important my example is to those around me. I shared it with young people at church camp during devos (great 5 point daily outline; speech, conduct, love, faith and purity). My kids have heard it several times as well. Even today at 55 I know I constantly need to be reminded of my example to those around me; at home, church, and work.
    Second, I need to say an AMEN to those who have written about Prov. 3:5-6. This scripture is my favorite through life’s many twists and turns. God has lead my family and I to 5 different churches in 5 different areas of the Tri-States, through many of life’s struggles: deaths, accidents, fellowship divisions, etc. Many times I did not understand the what, why or how of the “places” where He was leading, but God has ALWAYS been FAITHFUL. I didn’t (don’t) need to UNDERSTAND, I just needed to TRUST Him. Praise God!

    I memorized this verse in college when I began to grow in my walk with Christ. I am almost 47 years old and I really can’t count the number of times that this verse has literally gotten me through the hard stuff of life. It is engraved on my heart and it gives me grace, peace and strength no matter what.

    My first thought was Jeremiah 29:12 – 13. While I love the 11th verse, God really ministered His greatness to me in the verses that follow the popular 11th verse. I have prayed these verses for myself and over my family and received much comfort that He is at work in all our lives, drawing us to Himself. There is so much hope here! (I really love the whole section….how can you stop at verse 13???)

    Such a challenge to narrow it down to one verse…..Actually most of the entire books of Psalms & Ephesians are underlined in my Bible. However as I picket up the gauntlet of challenge & began reading through my underlines this morning…..this is the one that POPPED off the page. I know & believe that in Christ all things have passed away & are made new, but where my true comfort lies is in that he’s not finished with me yet! I am an ongoing refinement process….. more of Him & less of me in conjunction with His mercies that are new every morning. He knows as long as I’m wearing this cloak of flesh, I’m a’gunna need’em! I hold onto the promise that His love of & patience with me is enduring & He hasn’t brought me this far to “kick me to the curb” now! Bless you Dear Sister & your faithfulness in your commission to our Lord. <3

    Hi Liz, I have had a rough road growing up not knowing Christ. When I did come to begin listening to teachings about Jesus I was introduced to a very liberal church. It sounded good, there were things that they said that just didn’t make sense to me though. I questioned and was given round about answers. Two and a half years ago my husband of just over two years we’re looking at divorce, and also found a new church home. I found a verse and for several months I could not look at, think of anything else except this verse. There were many times that I didn’t even know what to pray, and I would thank God for what He had given me in these words. The verse is 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful, He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
    Today my husband have a strong marriage, and we are very active in our church home. We both serve on the church board, and assist the Pastor throughout the week. I know today when trials come that God is with me, and will see me through them as long as I keep my focus on Him.

    When I first came to know the Lord as a twelve-year old, Phillippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” NKJV) spoke to my heart and it was the first scripture I put to music. It has ministered to me throughout my life and walk with the Lord in many ways, but most recently in the home-going of my precious mother. She went to be with the Lord two weeks before my husband and I were recognized for 25 years of music ministry at our church. Our choir had commissioned an anthem using this scripture as its main text – my mother had told them it was my favorite. The promise it holds was my rock for that difficult time of grief and it continues to be my mantra especially in challenging and trying times. He is everything we need, and in giving us Himself, we have all we need to do whatever He calls us to. Glory to His name!

    The thought of him “exulting over me with loud singing” is just too awesome. And I tend to forget He loves me, fall into the pit of guilt and condemnation. I can’t count how many times this verse has pulled me up and out into the joy of the Lord.

    My favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11. It gives me peace to know God is in control of my life, especially during the difficult times. I was baptized in December of 1987 and this was the first verse I memorized. We had already adopted 3 kids through the foster system and went on to adopt 3 more. God sent them and we did the best we knew to raise them in the Lord. Many tears and prayers later, God is not done with us yet. We have had God send us our now 14 month granddaughter whom we took home from the hospital at 6 months after she was diagnosed with a depressed skull fracture and other injuries. Her mom and boyfriend are claiming no knowledge of how it happened. My husband retired in September (yeah!?!) and this verse is STILL getting me through each day. Don’t know what God wants from me, but He does. I just have to be quiet and listen. Thanks for your studies and insights. I so look forward to them each week.

    I have heard that one of the most common statements in the Bible is ‘fear not’. This verse reminds us to keep our faith and trust in the Lord, in all things. I wish I could memorize a lot more Scripture than I have but I’ve kept this in my heart since a small child when I first memorized it in Sunday School. It’s one of those verses that just ‘stuck’.

    I love the reminder always to give thanks to God. The second half of the verse was used at the close of every church service when I was growing up, so it has a history for me. I had a hard time choosing between this and Jeremiah 29:11, I will admit.

    I LOVE this bible study already! Thank you, Liz! I have never been able to pinpoint a single verse as a ‘life verse’ because there are so many amazing verses to choose from. However, as I think back over the last several years I have to say I go to Prov. 3:5,6 (and yes, I know that is 2, but they just go together too much to leave either one of them out). I have had struggles with, or rather because of, leaning to my own understanding. With all those struggles I have come to know, to claim, to accept and to love God’s understanding for my life because He will always direct my path in the best possible plan for me – which points to Jeremiah 29:11. This is going to be an awesome study and I am looking forward to it very much!

    Ephesians 6:10 has become the verse I go to when I am faced with anything that used to be so simple – before my health became so poor, I was always so self-sufficient and
    could so many things in my own strength. When God put me in a way that even showering can produce a fall, and is frightening, I have learned to rely on this verse and find myself repeating it over and over as I approach the shower. But, God is SO faithful as I sing to Him, “No, no, You never let go, You never let go of me.” I pray that I never stop “being strong in the Lord and in His mighty power” for the rest of my life!

    Most of these verses have been lifelines for me at one time or another in my life. But Isaiah 43: 1-2 putting my name in after name, and remembering not if I go through deep waters, but when, He will be with me.     My all time favorite verse is Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. This encourages me at times when I think no one else cares God still does and he wants to hear about it no matter how small or trivial it may be. It also helps me not to worry about everything like I used to in the past. Praise God.

    My go to verse is Isaiah 41:10. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” My husband, Tom, has been through too many frightening health issues to count, and fear is right there wanting to take charge in times of trouble. But God says, “So do not fear,…” Oh, how precious, how sustaining!

    It is really difficult to choose one verse. My go to book has been Philippians. But the last two years the Lord has been teaching me to “Come… all ye who are thirsty, come! from Isaiah 55. There are so many truths to learn. And towards the end it says :
    “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven
    and do not return there but water the earth,
    making it bring forth and sprout,
    giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
    11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
    it shall not return to me empty,
    but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
    and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

    12 “For you shall go out in joy
    and be led forth in peace;
    the mountains and the hills before you
    shall break forth into singing,
    and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
    13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
    instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
    and it shall make a name for the Lord,
    an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.” Hallelujah! He never gives upon me and I will flourish and glorify HIM!

    Mine is Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the plans I have for you” says the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans for hope and a future.”
    This has been a favorite for several years, long enough for God to prove over and over that He is my provider and sustainer.

    My go to verse is Psalm 27:1. ” The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? (NKJ) I read this for the first time when I was 16 and feeling fearful and abandoned living in a disfunctional home with an alcoholic stepfather. Such a sweet assurance and comfort that my Lord is always with me and I don ‘t have to be afraid.

    In truth, Jeremiah 29:11 which has been listed so often I’ll go with a second choice.
    Isaiah 41:13 ” For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.”
    The part that touches me so is that He take hold of my right hand. It’s OK if I m too weak or confused to figure it out…He holds onto me.

    Our Bible Study group studied prayer prior to Easter. It is comforting to me that Christ intercedes for us before God. Isaiah 49:16 just blows me away. But I am going to start with Isaiah 49:14 “But Zion said: “The Lord has forsaken me. And the Lord has forgotten me.” Can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even those may forget but I will not forget you. 49:16 Behold I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands. Your walls are continually before me.
    Thank you Lord I am amazed again and again at the statements of love God has made for each one of us and the promises and assurances He gives us.

    Wow! How awesome to see all the comments so far on the fav verses! I have to ring in with Jerm 29:11…over the 40 years I have walked with Christ, I can’t even count anymore how often this has been the verse that has stayed me through a difficult time. It has been such a blessing and comfort because as I pass through each dark night or difficult trial I have come out on the other side and there He shows me how He was there preparing me and going before me and the place I end up at is always a better place. I love remembering all He has already done for me as it is such an encouragement as I move forward. God is so very good to me and mine! He does have a future of hope planned for me…for each of us!
    This is a great study and I am so looking forward to seeing all the verses! Thanks for your time and effort to walk us all through the Word. I know you have a lot on your plate. I am praying for you!

    My verse is 2 Timothy 1:7 – For God has not given me the spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind. It is his truth that helps me when sometimes I can not put one foot in front of another for the crippling belief that I am no good. I particularly love the part about love and a sound mind.

    I have so may favorite verses, but one that that lights up my heart everytime is: Isaiah 66:10: “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For He has clothed me the garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness,as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as abride adorns herself with her jewels.”
    It is God who hath clothed me in His righteousness and He has clothed me with His garments. How awesome is that.. It covers everything.
    I am going to enjoy this study, as I love adding verses to my basket on my kitchen counter to go over when I make breakfast and coffee.

    There are so many that the Lord has spoken to my heart at very strategic times in my life….but the first one that really transformed my walk was Isaiah 41:9 and 10! You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,
    And called from its farthest regions,
    And said to you,
    ‘You are My servant,
    I have chosen you and have not cast you away:
    10 Fear not, for I am with you;
    Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you,
    Yes, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ Having been a 2nd grade school teacher….I taught my students the importance of where the accent was placed on a word! These verses came not very long after I had gotten radically saved! I was up early in the morning having a one on one with the Lord. I cried out to Him that I may as well quit right now as I had never completed anything I had ever started …..and the words I used were “I’ll never be your servant.” Tears streamed down my face as my Bible literally fell open, on my lap to these verses! I read them…..and when I realized that HE CALLED ME HIS SERVANT and that it was He that was going to transform me…..and would be holding my hand….I got up off my sofa and danced with JOY! That was nearly 30 years ago and He has done what He said He would do! To God be the GLORY!

    When I was eleven years old I walked to a nearby shopping center and bought my mother a promise box for Mother’s day. On the way home I pulled out a promise and read it, Proverbs 3:6, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.” That was fifty years ago. I’m still acknowledging and He is still directing.That has always been my favorite verse out of many very good verses.

    My current favorite that actually contains a complete thought is 2 Corinthians 2:14.
    “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.” It challenges me to think about what kind of “fragrance” I am “spreading.” [My most favorite verses require 2 or 3 verses to get the whole thought 🙂 ].

    My life verse is Phil. 1:6 which you already mentioned in your blog.
    In the Amplified it says ” And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ – right up to the time of His return – developing (that good work) and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you.

    The reason that this verse is so meaningful to me is that it reminds me that it is God working in me, continuing to transform me since the day I received Jesus into my life some 38 years ago. He has me on a journey and is with me in it until Christ returns or I go to be with Him in Heaven.

    My “life verse” is 2 Corinthians 4:8-9:
    8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don’t give up and quit. 9 We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going.

    I read this years back in a devotional that compared an airplane and what it takes to keep it in the air and all the pressure that is put on it and yet it flies. I love loving, praising and worshipful verses, but when the pressures of life hit, it is good to go back and read that we cannot be beaten as long as we keep God at our side!

    When I was a young Christian teenager (and even into my 20’s) I really wanted to know the will of God for MY life.
    I longed to know that and often looked at the sky and wished He would write what He wanted me to do right across the sky – then I would know exactly what His plan for me was. (I like to be well prepared and organised!)
    Years went by – and still it bugged me – was I doing what He wanted with my life? How did I know that?
    Until…… one day I was reading 1 Thessalonians 5 and there is was:
    16 Rejoice evermore.
    17 Pray without ceasing.
    18 In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus
    concerning YOU!

    right there in His word (no sky writing!) and so easy to remember!

    As the SRV (Stephanie Revised Version) has it:
    Be Joyful
    Be Prayerful
    Be thankful
    This is the will of God for YOU!

    Just for me! Wasn’t that personal? This is the will of God FOR YOU. How personal is that!
    As a mature Christian I now realise that God doesn’t always want to show us His BIG plan – rather He wants us to walk each step of the way, in faith, relying on Him.
    But at the time He managed to satisfy my long term desire by answering my prayer in His own unique way – and I have tried to make it the daily theme of my life.
    And it is so easy to remember (even for me!)

    I went through 5 pregnancies with my daughter and son-in-law and praise God, I am now a grandmother to an absolutely beautiful 5 year old granddaughter. She was so long awaited.I never failed in my faith in God that one day, He would give my daughter a child and He has. Her name is Allie. She means faith to me.     My favorite is Ephesians 3:20: God can do anything, you know — Far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, His spirit deeply and gently within us.

    I always loved this verse because I have such a huge imagination and such wild dreams that the idea that God is bigger than all that is just mind boggling. And that he wants to use all that “more” to do great things for me (and you, and you and you and you, etc) is awesome.

    I found this verse to be of great comfort when my cousin was on active duty in Afghanistan. And now it is my go to verse. It lifts me up at any time – during trials or during peace. What shall we fear? Nothing – God is right here with us giving us strength and upholding us!

    What a DELIGHT! I loved going through the comments to see what ladies have chosen. When I meet Jesus at 17 years old, I had no idea the adventure I would embark upon! As a new bride, my husband left our home early in the dark, cold hours before daybreak. I remember waking up in fear and reaching for my bible to scour through the Word for comfort and peace. The Holy Spirit showed me 2 Timothy 1:7, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.” I felt HIs Presence every time I prayed that verse. Most recently the verse I have prayed most often and in many situations has been, “I would have despaired if I had not believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD, be strong and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.” Psalm 27: 13-14. Life can seem very much out of control, because it is! God is in control and this verse helps me to focus on His character, His goodness, His faithfulness! Amen and Amen!

    Our God is so awesome! His word not only endures forever but encourages saints everywhere! I’m overcome by reading all these testimonies and verses. Our God and His word is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow; yet He uses His timeless word to speak directly and intimately into each one of our hearts right now. I love how big and small He is at the same time!! There is no one like our God!

    The Bible shows God’s love for us in every story. Songs like “Jesus Loves Me” taught me as a child that God loves me. But the day I read the words “I love you” in Isaiah 43:4 opened a new door to my understanding. Verses like Isaiah 43:1-2, Jeremiah 29:11, and Zephaniah 3:17 became ones that seemed written directly to me. Promises like Proverbs 3:5 and 1 Peter 2:24 were ones I could claim.
    Liz, I am so looking forward to this study of verses! Your way of teaching always increases my understanding. I have been blessed today by Wednesday’s post and these comments, too.

    Wow! I am overwhelmed by how many different verses you all love. Mine is very simple but oh so wonderful too. Proverbs 46:10 has been my verse since I was a single mum at 19. He spoke to me then and has not stopped since. If I come before Him with my simple faith and lean on Him I become still and can honestly say that I know He is God with everything that holds true. I bought this on a poster those many years ago and I now have it on my wall made in pewter to last all my life. I love it as it brings me to the cross each time in thankfulness and also humility for all He is to me. Can’t wait Liz to share with you and everyone else over the coming weeks 🙂

    My very favorite verse is Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I didn’t have to think about this at all. The moment I read the challenge, my verse immediately came to mind. I’ve struggled with self-esteem issues my entire life, but this verse is my assurance that I am valued and valuable. Since I can do all things through Him, I’m free to believe in myself, and to change my circumstances because I am strong through Christ.

    Studying and then living Phippians 4:8 changed my life from one of being caught in the whirlwind of emotion around me, to thinking and living a life of joy and peace!
    “Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

    And number 2 verse for me. Is found in Psalm 118:24 … This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

    John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”. 5 years ago our lives crashed in around us. Our 18 year old son died in a car accident, his lifeless body lay in a cornfield all night long until someone found him the next morning. I thought I would never survive this loss and picturing him there all alone tormented my soul. But the Lord spoke to me, and this verse was one that gave me HIs peace and continues to do so. Thank you Liz for your words, wisdom and humor.

    Jesus saved me when I was four years old. That was 78 years ago. I can remember my mother saying, many times, through the years. “Everything happens for the best”. this was her paraphrase of Romans 8:28. This scripture has sustained me so often through the years. When our daughter died at age 42, God spoke this verse to me, over and over. I could not begin to understand how her death could ‘work together for good’, but what an awesome God we serve. Since that time, our entire family has come together in love and understanding, and walk more closely with Him.
    As many have written about their favorite verses, I have said “Oh, yes, that is my favorite, too”. What an exciting adventure this will be. Thank you, Liz.

    My favorite verse has always been Hebrews 13:5 ~ Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Through all the trials and problems, he has always been by my side. This verse also speaks to my minimalist side. 🙂 Be content with what you have. This has been my mantra for most of my life. How perfectly appropriate for me that they are both in one verse! LOL

    This is the verse I have chosen because of the vast distance between my “head knowledge” and my “heart knowledge.” It is so much easier to accept God’s word and decisions in my life in “my head” than “in my heart.”

    Luke 22:31:
    Simon, Simon, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.
    This verse jumped out at me during a time when my elder daughter was walking the wild side and I really needed to KNOW that Jesus was going to help our family get through this. Even more than that, He was going to use it for His good. The most important thing was to know that Jesus Himself was praying for us…for me…that my faith would not fail. He had grasped my hand and when it was over I was to turn around and give others a hand up. To me, this is the Christian life in a nutshell. Bless you Liz…you IS a blessing!

    ” I have blotted out as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and as a thick cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed ye. Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: shout, ye lower parts of the earth: break forth into singing, ye mountains, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob(substitute your own name), and glorified himself in Israel.”
    It reminds me that I am forgivable and worth loving. He does not remember or hold my sins against me. Now if I could remember this and forgive myself.

    What a wonderful idea, Liz, to unpack 20 of our favorite verses! My favorite verse(s) are many, but these go hand in hand. Choosing one: “My grace is sufficient for you, for [My] power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Through many trials as a mother, I’ve clung to this verse.
    Taking it further, we move to Hebrews 4:15-16: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.”
    We are welcome and invited to approach the Lord, to kneel before His throne of grace, when in turmoil. To seek and receive His mercy and grace over and over. Jesus knows what I’m going through because He’s been there. And at the proper time (not necessarily our timing)–always–that mercy and grace will be delivered in person. Beautiful truth to hold onto.

    My life verse is Psalm 40:1-3 and here’s why:
    At a friend’s house when I was 12 years old, I had a beer. The feeling that came over me was incredible. I felt whole, included, a part of, worthy! I spent the next 16 years wanting to feel that again, to no avail. The last six years of my addiction I spent on the street, the few exceptions are when I was in jail. I smoked crack, prostituted and ate out of garbage cans. I can relate to the prodigal son in Luke 15, in that I was given so much, just to squander it away. Also, when I came to my senses, I was welcomed back with open arms. Not only by my family, who loved me and supported my recovery wholeheartedly, but by my Heavenly Father. I was 28 when I entered treatment and started my recovery journey. Yes, He is still setting captives free! I was dating my now husband when he heard Pastor Dale on T.V. I know now that God was drawing us to Himself. Being in a 12 step program, I knew about higher powers and that helped, at least it wasn’t me anymore! But knowing the one true God through a relationship with Jesus Christ has done for me what that first drink did and so much more! And the consequences are beyond better! We started attending C.O.R. in 2002 and when I prayed with the Pastor and accepted Jesus as my Savior, I knew I had been forgiven. One of my life verses is Psalm 40:1-3 “I waited patiently on the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to my God.” Like I said, I knew I had been forgiven, yet there were still consequences from the way I lived for so long. During a minor surgery to remove a cyst, it was discovered that I had several fibroid tumors and that my fallopian tubes were completely blocked (due to the many infections I had had over the years that went untreated). The doctor told me I would never be able to conceive, let alone carry a child. I was so sad, but Louis always said, if God wants us to have a child we will.” After attending C.O.R. awhile and learning God’s word, the Holy Spirit convicted Louis and I to live separately and not be intimate until we were married. Well as you can imagine that moved up the wedding date! It was still 2 years later when we married, and we spent that time honoring God and seeking to know Him more. I know that because of this, God made the impossible, possible. Three months after being married I was bleeding for several weeks and went to my GYN. He ordered a special sonogram where they would fill my uterus with liquid and take a picture of it. Before the procedure the nurse asked me if I was pregnant. I said no, she then asked my GYN, he said, “There’s no way she’s pregnant.” The nurse was firm (Thanks be to God) and refused to do the procedure until I did a pregnancy test. So I did, I was in fact pregnant! God’s hands were all over that appointment. If she had done the procedure it would have aborted the baby. Psalm 113:9 says “He settles the barren woman in her home as a happy mother of children.” God makes a way where there is no way. I mentioned how I could relate to the prodigal son in Luke 15. I can also relate to the adulteress woman who went from shame to forgiven to ministry. Barnabas who cried out for mercy, not letting anyone shush him. Abraham when God provided a ram. Joshua, when God stopped time for him, the Israelites when God made a way through the wilderness, the Red Sea and the Jordon River! Hagar, when He opened her eyes, Hannah, Rachel and so many others when He opened their wombs. He speaks to me through people and His word! He’s made walls crumble down in my life just like He did for Joshua. He gives victory to the obedient, He heals, supplies, resurrects, delivers and redeems! Only God can take something so broken and shattered, and not only make it whole again, but make it productive too! He not only restored me, He redeemed me, and turned my mess into His message of Grace! My faith has increased, and now even though my uterus had to be removed after giving birth to Grace E., when people ask if we’ll have more children, I say “If it is God’s will!” Not having a uterus doesn’t mean anything to God. He can do ANYTHING!

Isaiah 40:31 In order to gain strength and walk, run or fly I have to WAIT on the LORD. I hate waiting, I try to do all myself but must learn to wait and lean.     My new favorite verse is Isaiah 41:13 which says, “For I the Lord your God hold your right hand. It is I who say to you, ‘Fear not, I am the One who helps you.'” Seriously, what could be more comforting than knowing that God holds my hand! That means whatever I’m facing, whatever I’m going through, He’s right there beside me helping me make wise choices and guiding me. But my favorite verse that I always “go to” is Philippians 4:6 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guide your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus.” Hmmm, I’m sensing a pattern here of letting go of any worries and letting God guide me by His peace. When our son was making some seriously unwise choices in life, I breathed in and out with this verse so I wouldn’t come undone in the waiting. (And yes, he did come through the valley and has regained his relationship with the Lord!) There are many more examples of this verse giving me strength and comfort . . . but too long for a post!

    I’m grateful that Liz was born into a funny family and she chooses to share her humor and joy with us. What a gift. I was born into a family of ugly strife, despair, and abuse– and as a little one thought I was to blame. Sad that little ones always think they are the center of the universe. 🙂 So I grew up shame-filled and fear-full. God has worked and continues to work glorious freedom and His Peace into my life. I love Him and His Word.

    It may seem a little odd, but Joshua 3:17 — “The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.” (14-17 gives good context)

    The priests (worshippers) stand in the middle of the Jordan river, holding back the water, and stay there while the rest of the Israelittes crossover into the promised land. The themes there: intercession, selflessness, worship, empowering others, standing in the gap…have all been, and continue to be, significant in my life.

    Our first long-term foster child came to us when he was 3 mos. old. Because of the terribly inefficient foster care system, he lived with us until he was 3 years old, dearly loved by all our family. At that time, he was placed for adoption with a wonderful Christian couple, and we knew it was best for him, but it broke our hearts to let him go. We literally went through the grieving process…it was like a death. At one point I considered not continuing with foster care and a dear friend sent me the following verse: Galatians 6:9 “Let us not grow weary when doing good, for in due season we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” I have also added the beginning of verse 10: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…”

    My second favorite verse is: James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the Crown of Life God has promised to those who love him.”

    As Karen Dodgson started out, my favorite, too, is Jer 29:11. After seeing that verse literally everywhere I went (in stores, on posters, online), I was praying that verse hoping for a new job to go along with my new master’s degree. But I never got a new job, and three years later, I found out why – I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, and if I had gotten a new job, with that diagnosis and the way the economy was, I wouldn’t have had the job for long. Instead, I was still at my job of 29 yrs and even with a new director who started while I was on my initial surgical leave, I was able to keep my job despite chemo and its side-effects and hospitalization for blood clots and a bunch of other stuff. And when they reorganized my department, and I retired, the Lord led me deeper still into His promises and pointed me in a new direction expanding on my experience in the business world and in my church adult faith formation work. God is good – all the time!

    Isaiah 40:31 is the verse that has been one of the biggest blessings to me. We adopted a child then found out he had cp and autism. For 5 years we seldom slept more than a few hours at a time. We had medical appointments , early intervention classes pt, ot and on and on. But God gave us His strength through it all. At 5 we had to place him in a special group home for his sake as well as my husbands and my health. It broke my heart but again God used this verse to help me thru it. Our son is now a 28 year old and he has a job and best of all he has a relationship with Christ!

      For several years now my “go to” verses to re-focus my prayer life, and my activities have been Colossians 1:9-12. “For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you, and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.”

    I agree with everyone else, I have soooo many verses that speak to me. The past few months it has been Psalms 61:2, ” when my heart is overwhelmed, I will look to the Rock that is higher than I”. The one verse that sticks out over my life has been John 11:25-26, ” Jesus sais to her, ‘ I am the resurrection and the life, he that believes in me, even though he dies will live. Anyone who lives in me and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” it reminds me to have faith and believe because if our God is more powerful than death, then what do I have to fear or doubt? I love your Bible studies. The women of Easter blessed me and I loved learning more about those women. I can’t wait to start these verses. Thank you for your ministry and all that you do!

    Isaiah 49:16..Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…
    I can think of no better place to be than in HIS HANDS….as a nurse i often write little notes of importance to my self on the palm of my hand untill they are carried out…there i know they will not be lost or misplaced, “BUT” God goes one futher and ‘engraves’ us on the palm of HIS HAND…now that is …permanent !!! That’s security !!!
    This verse carried me through the season of a brain tutmor.
    i love how the Lord has a specific word or verse for each season of our life.
    And i love that ‘each’ of HIS spoaken words has a lesson and such power within them…just as Liz is teaching us…Thank you Liz

    During this “season” in my life.. With the invasion of this tumor on my brain stem.. The Lord has given me multiple promises and encouragement. But I will have to say Isaiah 41:10 is my “go to” verse!
    “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed , for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
    I am grateful for the healing God has done, and for the miracles He keeps surrounding me with. He is an amazing God… I am humbled.

    Wow, so many comments, so many wonderful verses and I enjoyed reading the verses that have spoken to everyone.

    Second, Liz, I have to say I have been following your blog for several months now, having been directed here by a link from the beautiful Ann Voskamp’s blog, but I think this is actually the first time I’ve commented. So I must tell you I loved your series on the women of the tomb. I also love the way you broke down each word in this week’s study, and how you show the words in different translations, which provides such an interesting picture and fullness.

    That said, although it’s so hard to choose just one, as others have said, my life verse is Psalm 91:1 “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” It’s the one in my heart, in my mind, on my wall, and it brings me peace and comfort.

    My back-up is Isaiah 43:18-19 “Remember not the former things, nor consider on the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?”

    I also love Jeremiah 29:11 and here’s a shout out for my mom’s favorite, which is Proverbs 3:5-6. So many great verses to choose, I can’t wait to see the Top 20 broken down!

    I absolutely love this, Liz!! I am a words-girl – I love learning the in-depth history and intricate hues of meaning in each word, be they English, Hebrew, or Greek. So the way you unpack the treasures of each – mmm, it speaks delicious truth and comfort to my soul.

    I have way too many favorites to choose just one verse above the others, but Micah 6:8 has come up repeatedly over the years. Since this verse sums up the call for every believer’s life, I would love to see what insights God might reveal through it in this study. But even if it’s not one of the 20 chosen, I can’t wait to see what insights will be revealed in these other passages!

They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.
    Discovered this verse after our son came to us to tell us he was gay. It has been a lifeline ever since!!

    I am so thankful that God’s mercies are new every morning and that He is faithful. These are my “go to” verses – because I need them every day!

    I haven’t read through all of the comments, but I’ve seen my favourite pop up a few times… Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Growing up Catholic, I was always involved in the church, and always believed in God, had Jesus in my heart, and never really questioned any of it. As I got into university, I started questioning a little more, not whether or not there was a God, but why I believed what I believed, and what the Bible really said on the matter. It’s as if I had the puzzle pieces, but couldn’t quite fit them together. At the time, I met my now husband, who was already born again, and he was very patient in answering my unending questions, and in encouraging me to find the answers in the Bible. While I was praying on all of this, this verse seemed to pop up all over the place: in writing, on the radio, in sermons. One day, while I was praying for God to show me what it meant to be saved (a bit of a foreign concept to me, having grown up Catholic) the Sixpence None the Richer song of this verse came on my computer. I just felt a peace about everything, and finally ”got it”. 🙂 Anyway, sorry if I’m rambling a little, it’s just near and dear to me. 🙂
    Another verse that kept me going during the final hours of labour with our daughter was Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. 🙂

I have tried to memorize verses before and it hasn’t worked but will give it one more try. My favorite verse is Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; they rod and thy staff they comfort me.     Ever since I can remember mine has been Isaiah 40: 31. Recently, I stumbled upon a translation of it from The Message: (Isaiah 40: 27-31)

    Why would you ever complain, O Jacob,
    or, whine, Israel, saying,
    “God has lost track of me.
    He doesn’t care what happens to me”?
    Don’t you know anything? Haven’t you been listening?
    God doesn’t come and go. God lasts.
    He’s Creator of all you can see or imagine.
    He doesn’t get tired out, doesn’t pause to catch his breath.
    And he knows everything, inside and out.
    He energizes those who get tired,
    gives fresh strength to dropouts.
    For even young people tire and drop out,

    I love this fresh version of it – it jumps off the page and breathes new life into my old favorite!     Romans 12:1-2 – I’m a Precept Bible study leader and we are studying Romans. This is where we are camped at the moment. I have studied Romans before, but it is all new again this time around.
    “Therefore, I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove that the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable, and perfect.”
    Renewing your mind is essential to my every moment daily. This is something we must do. Think about what we are thinking about. Do not allow ourselves to be overcome by wrong thoughts. This has helped me as I went through a period of depression. Renewing my mind and not believing the lies of Satan. Praise The Lord!

    When I was saved 13 yrs ago I was a newbie in a class at church called, “Transferable Concepts” and it was there that I read Phil 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” When I get down on myself for failing in my walk I remember this verse and that I’m a work in progress, always. Thankfully, Jesus is not going to give up on me, no matter what. He is for me, and it doesn’t get any better than that!     One verse that stood out to me as I studied the Bible with a ladies’ group was Genesis 16:13, “…You are the God who sees me…”. Hagar thought that she was alone in the world, and thrown out of her home, she tried to run away from her problems. How often do we try to run and hide? God is always there, watching and and waiting for us to ask for His help. He sees us, knows us, and wants to help…we are NEVER alone! What a blessing…and a gentle reminder.

John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my Peace I now give and bequeath to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. Stop allowing yourselves to be agitated and disturbed, and do not permit yourselves to be fearful and intimidated and cowardly and unsettled.” There is no other Peace in the world but Jesus.     3-Phil 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. (With all of the garbage in the world today and everything we are bombarded with, this verse is one to hang on to! Like Elizabeth George said, wouldn’t it be great is the 10,000 thoughts that go through our minds everyday were pleasing to the Lord?)

    Thank you for Psalm 38:5. That’s one I’m not familiar with. The one I chose is like it . . . James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God who gives to all men generously without reproaching and it will be given to him.

    It is so like God to give generously, and he doesn’t reproach me for not already knowing or being what I should but rather gives me what I need in order to grow and trust Him more.

    I also love “Let us not grow wearing in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” Don’t know where it is off the top of my head, but it encourages me to keep on in my homeschooling and training the children. I often fail and get discouraged. This one helps me get back up and try again, seeking wisdom for how to do differently and better.

    My choice is Proverbs 3:5-6- “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding” It was early in September, 1994. I was driving home, from working day shift, on my favorite gravel (back) roads, eating a DQ and talking to Mom on my car phone, when on a narrow S-curve, a semi-gravel hauler truck approached. I calmly told Mom, “I have to put the phone down, I am going to get hit by a semi, hang on”. Using both hands, I steered the car into the bushes at the edge of the road, and bowed my head. There was not room for us to pass, and he was flying fast! I waited. I heard a noise and my car moved. Then a voice in my head, very clearly: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding”. Then silence. I lifted my head and looked around. Everything seemed intact, except my driver’s door mirror was gone. I picked up the phone where Mom was waiting, and told her I was ok. A man came walking from behind. It was the semi driver, having stopped, afraid to look at how bad he had hit me. We both stood there, in shock, as there was no room for him to pass by me, even with my car in the bushes, but all I lost was my rear-view outside mirror! “I should have run over you”, he said. “I know”, I said. There just was nothing to say, except “Thank you, God”. I backed out of the bushes, resumed finishing my DQ, and talking to Mom and was home in five minutes. But what an experience I had brought with me! That verse has been my support and direction ever since. Two weeks later, I lost my 17 year job due to ownership change, and, two years later, my healthy son would start a nightmare journey through seizures, brain tumor, and 50 some surgeries to keep a brain shunt functioning.
    And God walked with me every step, as he still does today! When He says “Trust”, He means it! No, I don’t get all my questions answered, no, the path isn’t smooth, but I continue to lean on Him and practice trusting. I could write much more to tell you how it has worked! PS- My son’s brain rejected the shunt after seven years, (a miracle to his doctors!), and he is currently in grad school.
    Liz, I can’t wait for this study, whether my verse is chosen or not! Ta-Da!

    My life verse is Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” I have found my walk with Him to be a great adventure, full of surprises and excitment. There have been challenges, of course, but He is faithful and forever present. Indeed, He has changed a lot of my desires. One day as I was thanking Him for all the opportunities He had given me, for all those dreams/desires that had come true, I could almost hear Him laughing. He said, “Child, I planted those desires in your heart years ago; I have just opened the doors to make them happen.” Humbling? Yes. But so wonderful. To walk with Him is indeed sweet!

    I love that God takes note of our conversations with one another about Him and includes us in a book of remembrance. I am amazed that he calls us his treasure. In the words of an old song, “the lifeboat soon is coming to gather the jewels home.”

    This has also been a verse I’ve loved since I was a child:
    Prov 16:31 The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.
    Now my head is frosted with time, and my prayer in this season of my life is that he would be glorified in me.

I have constantly struggled with saying the right things at the right time and so when I came across Psalm 19:14 “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Whenever I have to do any public speaking I recite this verse to calm my nerves and strengthen my resolve to speak boldly. It helps me focus on God and not on what others think of the words given to me to speak.

My verse is 2 Corinthians 2:15 – “For to God, we are Christ’s fragrance, both to those who are being saved and to those who are perishing.” By His grace, I am His fragrance to Him and to my world.
