7 Reasons Why the Book of Ruth Still Rocks

Bible Study Blog "The Girl's Still Got It"

Welcome to The Girl’s Still Got It Bible Study Blog! This September thru November we’ll be reading through my new book on Ruth, one chapter a week. Then each Wednesday I’ll offer my take on the Study Guide questions and invite your comments. Easy, right?

For busy girls like us, this is a Bible study that works—at home or on the road, at your computer or on your smartphone. Read the chapter when you can, check the blog when you like, and share your thoughts when you’re ready.

Before we take a walk with Ruth and the God who rocked her world, here are seven reasons why the biblical book of Ruth still has the power to shape our thoughts, touch our emotions, and impact our lives.

1. Ruth shows us where to turn and what to do when life hurts.
Despite her losses, this young widow fixes her gaze on God and pours her energy into helping others.

2. Ruth gives us permission to be bold when we need to be.
When her future is at stake, Ruth is anything but meek, mild, and submissive. Go, Ruth!

3. Ruth demonstrates the beauty of humility and hard work.
As a gleaner, Ruth must let go of her pride and pick up the scattered grain to feed her family.

"So she went out and began to glean in the fields behind the harvesters..." Ruth 2:3

4. Ruth proves that a woman doesn’t have to be beautiful to get a man’s attention.
When Boaz sees Ruth across a crowded field, it’s her commitment to her mother-in-law that impresses him most.

5. Ruth teaches us the value of speaking our minds and opening our hearts.
However lowly her position, Ruth isn’t afraid to ask this rich and influential landowner why he treats her with generosity and loving-kindness.

6. Ruth makes it clear that patience is a virtue worth cultivating.
When her mother-in-law tells her to wait for Boaz to act, Ruth wisely sits tight. Tough to do, but so worth it.

7. Ruth gives us a glimpse of our Kinsman-Redeemer and the hope he offers.
From the first verse of Ruth to the last, we long for a Redeemer to save the day. Does he ever!

Liz, thanks so very much for having an online bible study!! I live in a small community and our small but mighty church is currently looking for a Pastor so our CWF attendance has been down and actual disbanded for the time being. I was really needing something for just me, not for my husband, not for my kids, but just me; and once again God proves just how awesome he is, had I not signed up for the Women of Faith Facebook updates I would have missed out entirely! I am so excited and can’t wait to get started, I’m going to get the book tonight after work!

    God Bless You!

  31. Steffennie September 15, 2012 at 4:51 am #

I’ve been waiting to get the book and was finally able to this week. I’m getting ready to start chapter 2, but I LOVE this blog!!!! My church doesn’t really offer bible study groups just for women, so this is a unique chance that I wouldn’t have without this blog. I already read the discussion questions and use the study guide in the book, but I can’t wait to dive even deeper with this blog. I’m so excited!!!!
Have you ever thought about doing this for your Bad Girls books after you finish the one for Ruth? I bet you would get a ton of positive responses. I know I would love to reread them with a blog like this.

    • Liz Curtis Higgs September 16, 2012 at 8:55 pm #

Dear sisters, I trust you’ve found Week 1 and Week 2 here on the blog page of my website and have left comments, if you’re so moved. I love reading and responding to each one. And yes, Steffennie, I’ve thought about going on to blog about other books in this format. When we finish The Girl’s Still Got It, I’ll seek God’s leading first, then see what our sisters have to say online. Bless you for suggesting it!

    5. Ruth teaches us the value of speaking our minds and opening our hearts.

    6. Ruth makes it clear that patience is a virtue worth cultivating.
When her mother-in-law tells her to wait for Boaz to act, Ruth wisely sits tight. Tough to do, but so worth it.
I was ALL excited with 5 and was about to jump in with both feet and open up my heart. I was thinking it was a confirmation BUT then I read 6 and wow what a smack to my rationalizing. I KNOW now that 6 is my confirmation.
